Why do we sometimes fail, even when we try working for the Lord?
Why, when we do battle with evil we often get discouraged?
Why so many of us get defeated spiritually before we even start to battle?
Doubts, mistrust, and unbelief!

I love science fiction movies; yes, forgive me. In the film “The Matrix,” a man named Morpheus constantly tells Neo that he is the ONE. Morpheus tells Neo that he will defeat the enemy subjugating humanity in the movie’s story. However, Neo always doubted he was the one throughout the film; even a so-called prophet put him in further doubt until almost at the movie’s end. Finally, Neo was trapped; the enemy moved in for the kill and shot a barrage of bullets at Neo to destroy him, only for Neo to raise his hand and yell “NO.” The shots froze in the air, and they fell harmlessly to the ground. His mentor, Morpheus, then proclaimed, “He is starting to believe.”
I know this is a science fiction film, but there are some parallels of truth we can explore.
Could it be that simple? Could we, like Neo, believe what the Word of God says, use the Scriptures as a sword, and be victorious in our spiritual battles?
If so, how? Let’s explore what God’s Word says about this concept.
What does the Bible say?
God has always called us to be strong, to trust in Him and His power. Yet, we forget that it is His might, not ours. We face battles, and we shrink in fear. Paul told the Ephesian church that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but spiritual forces in high places. To be victorious, we need something not found in us.
Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:10-12
Notice he says, “put on” the “full” armor of God. We must equip ourselves with power beyond us. When we wrestle, we need to understand that all the incredible power of the almighty is at our disposal if we believe.
Is anything too hard for Yahweh?… Genesis 18:14
There is NOTHING too hard for our God!
What does it mean?
If we talk the talk, we need to walk the walk. Someone once said that God helps those that help themselves; wait, what? Where do they get that? Not from the Word of God.
God helps those who trust Him and those who cannot wrestle against invisible forces on their strength. When Goliath, the giant, threatened the army of Israel in the Old Testament, the army started shaking in their armor, their full, physical armor, afraid. Young David refused the physical armor given to him; instead, he relied on the power of God Himself:
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today, Yahweh will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh’s, and he will give you into our hand.” 1 Samuel 17:45-47
In his strength, I doubt David could stand against this enemy. Goliath mocked him and defied the God of Israel. Neither can we stand on our strength against the invisible enemy we face daily. But David walked the walk. He stepped out with a sling and a stone, had faith and complete trust in the God of Israel, and killed the giant. David performed the natural part; God accomplished the supernatural.

What does this mean?
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Let us move this fact from our brain into our hearts and live it daily.
What does it mean to me?
When we board a plane to travel to another city, we place our life in the hands of the pilots and the control towers, the maintenance crew, the makers of the parts of the planes, etc. Once inside the plane, you are no longer in control. You sit there and trust the aircraft will carry you to your destination. You were once in your city, Houston, and now you are in-plane.
When we believe by faith and trust our Lord Jesus Christ, we are in-Christ; this is what it means to be a Christian.
For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26-28
When you are in-Christ, you are in His hands, safe, and victorious. Do we believe this? With this in mind, let us do what the song above says, “We believe for it.”
Believing in Jesus is just the beginning. Having faith in Jesus is crucial. Trusting in the provisions that Jesus has made available for us is the key to a victorious life.
After David killed Goliath, the army of Israel advanced and claimed the victory that David procured via faith in God.
The victory that Jesus procured at the cross is ours; we need to enforce that victory on our invisible enemy the same way, by advancing in battle, by faith in the name of Jesus, the Powerful name of Jesus.
Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done. Matthew 21:21
Let us put on the full armor of God, and deploy the Sword of the Spirit against our defeated enemy.
Believe for it! The victory is ours, and remember this:
Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
We win in the end!
Amen!
