Fix My Eyes

…Love like I’m not scared, give when it’s not fair, live life for another, take time for a brother. Fight for the weak ones, speak out for freedom, find faith in the battle, stand tall but above it all. Fix my eyes on You, On You…

Our eyes, the window into our world. What a wonderful gift has God given us, and one we take for granted daily. With them we experience the beauty that God has created and we stand in awe of His wonderful creation.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. Psalm 19:1-2 NIV

It is a wonderful gift, but like a regular window, it can be abused and/or used for purposes not intended by the Creator. According to the Holy Scriptures, every child of God has three enemies. The Flesh, the world, and the devil. In the book of 1 John we read about two enemies, the Flesh and the World

For everything in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–comes not from the Father but from the world.
1 John 2:16 NIV

In 2 Corinthians we read about the devil, who is blinding God’s creation:

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV

In the garden of Eden, the devil approached Eve, who was sinless and innocent up to that time and tempted her. The devil contradicted God’s command that Eve should not eat of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil or she will die. That is why he is called the devil, which translated means LIAR, DECEIVER:

You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it…
Genesis 3:4-6 NIV

Satan attacked the innocent Eve with our other two enemies:

She finally saw the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eyes .
(Lust of the flesh)
And also desirable for gaining wisdom.
(Pride of Life)

Are we, Christians, in danger of these attacks? Yes, daily, every breathing minute. The devil wants us to take our eyes off of Christ and focus on temporal things that are passing away and do not please God. The apostle Peter warned the believers to be alert and guard against this enemy:

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8 NIV

The Lord Jesus also explained the devil will test the believer:

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Luke 22:31-32

What do you Fix Your Eyes on?

We will deny we fix our eyes on the devil, but do we sit in front of the TV and watch material that pollute our minds? The world’s philosophy is contrary to God’s word. What we watch on TV reflects this. We then go and live out these images, these fantasies, even pursue them. We like to feed the desires of the flesh. We pursue dishonest ways in order to become famous so others can see what we have become (lust of the flesh, pride of life.)

Brothers, do we look at other women with lust in ours eyes? Sisters, do you envy and want to be like those glamorous woman you see in TV?

When we let the lust of our eyes, the lust of our flesh, and the pride of life get between us and our God we grieve the Holy Spirit and we hurt those that love us most. We should be mindful of this and resist, focus on better things, put the kingdom of God first.

The apostle Paul wrote about what we should focus on:

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

And finally, the book of Hebrews tells us WHO to Fix Our Eyes on:

…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV

Abba Father,

Forgive me when we fix my eyes on anything other than Jesus. Give me strength to resist the devil, the flesh, and the fallen world system. I place all my TRUST on the Holy Spirit to guide me and convict me when I stray from the path of righteousness. Let my walk be for your glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!

By Him, For Him!
